Life throws us many different experiences, some of which we don’t want but still have to go through. Each of them is a gift; although we may not see the offering it affords us at the time. Within each of these gifts is hidden a learning experience. All to often we obliterate the learning by escaping from the emotions and difficulties that can accompany these gifts. One of the ways we do this is by turning to food as a comforter to bury our emotions and fears.

I have just had one of those gifts – my daughter has been in hospital for an operation. Being human, the stress got to me and back crept the comfort eating, for a while.

The difference, this time, was that I acknowledged the reasons behind my inappropriate eating and began to give myself the love and support I needed. Beating myself up needlessly had never served any purpose other than increasing my distress. That of course only led to more comfort eating!

Breaking this vicious circle is the gift I found. It showed me how important it is to acknowledge the reasons behind our comfort eating, forgive ourselves and turn for support from the people who feed our souls. Getting back on track with my  ‘Conscious Eating’ habits requires us to look for the gift and learn from the experience.
